Tours of the Tales

Cadre (Speedy's/"Jiffy's")

Cadre, 301 Union Street (southwest corner of Montgomery and Union streets)

This was the location of Speedy’s New Union Grocery.  Speedy’s was the model of Jiffy’s where Lionel Wong worked.  Lionel was the father of DeDe’s twins, Edgar and Anna.  (Tales of the City)  In the “Tales of the City” mini-series, the grocery was called Wong’s.

For twenty-five years, Speedy’s was owned by Marshall and Art Dong.  Art was the inspiration for Lionel’s character.   The store was a Telegraph Hill institution.  The name Speedy’s is derived from the family name of the original owners:  Spediacci.  The Dongs retired at the end of 2003.
