226 Filbert
Armistead Maupin also once lived at this address.
Armistead briefly described his residence here in Logical Family. He described his place as a “Hobbity garden apartment with low ceilings.”
While Armistead was living here, his mother offered to give him his Grandpa Branch’s old mahogany sleigh bed. His mother then shipped the bed. When it was delivered, the bed had to be hauled down the wooden steps from Montgomery Street.
Later that same year, Armistead’s parents came to visit him at this residence. Armistead introduced his folks to Grace Marchant during that visit. More about that introduction at our next stop
In the 1947 film Dark Passage, Humphrey Bogart’s character, Vincent Perry, climbs the Filbert Steps from Sansome Street at the foot of the hill. At one point during his climb, he stops in front of 226 Filbert to catch his breath before continuing his climb up Telegraph Hill.
